What is a travel visa?
A travel visa is authorization from a country to enter, stay, and leave under conditions printed on the visa (dates, entries, purpose). People often say “travel visa” when they mean a tourist visa. In Nepal, a tourist/travel visa is for visiting — not for taking a job, enrolling as a student, or claiming NRN citizenship.
Travel visa vs other Nepal visas
- Tourist (travel) visa — holidays, trekking, visiting friends, short cultural stays.
- Business visa — commercial activity tied to a Nepali entity.
- Student visa — study or academic research.
- Work visa — paid employment with labour clearance.
- NRN documentation — identity and origin status; not a substitute for the correct entry visa unless you also hold Nepali citizenship.
If an airline or hotel asks whether you have a “travel visa,” they usually mean a valid Nepal tourist visa or proof you are visa-exempt (for example, an Indian passport).

An e-visa is a visa issued electronically. Nepal’s common tourist path is still visa on arrival plus an online arrival form, which is not always branded as a full e-visa. Either way, you need valid permission to enter.
